Air Canada is buying new electric airplanes!!!

Sadly their all electric range is only 200 kms or 120 miles. Here in Alberta the distance between the airports of the two major cities is 245 kms 147 miles. So unless they move the airports or use ICE onboard generators those airplanes will not see service in Alberta. But the bigger question is who would fly a distance of 200 kms? When you consider you have to get to the airport and clear security and go through all the hassles of boarding and unboarding then collecting your luggage if you have any and finding ground transportation to your ultimate destination.... Not only is it quicker and cheaper to drive but when you get there you have your own vehicle. If the government of Canada was not a major shareholder in Air Canada Air Canada would not be buying these airplanes.

"Progressive" policies are not synonymous with progress are they.

Better get some horses and/or dog teams. You guys are not flying anywhere. 😮

How long does it take to charge?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@MrBrownstone They said about 50 minutes which to my mind would require a massive amount of electricity and much elevated risk of fire since the batteries will get very warm.

@hippyjoe1955 I thought planes weren’t allowed to transport lithium batteries. Should be interesting.

@MrBrownstone Yeah I have tried to ship lithium battery hand tools to job sites. One battery in carry on and one battery in checked luggage only. I won't be flying any electectic airplane in my lifetime. Knowing as I do that lithium batteries lose capacity over time how do they down rate the range of the aircraft to correspond to the lost capacity. If you put in a pound of jet fuel through a jet engine you can very accurately calculate how much energy you will have. The same is not so with batteries as they are effected by heat and cold and age of battery. Not to mention what about wind? If you have such a limited range to start with an unexpected 30 mph head wind could be catastrophic.

Height of stupidity. Never thought electric plane were a good idea.
