Supreme Court declares Trumps tariff binge illegal

So that great big beautiful pot of cash that was going to pay for everything, including all those cheques everyone was getting just disappeared. And it gets worse. Some countries (like mine) are due refunds. Australia in in line for a $1.4 billion return of funds. No. We dont want it in used submarines.. Gold will do nicely..😷

I think they also indicated that paying back the tarrifs would not be practical, so, no refunds. But I kept listening to the end of the statement. Maybe only your part is real.

Some U.S. importers have already filed suit, asking for refunds.

Bottom line: what the government did was ILLEGAL - it SHOULD have to pay back U.S. importers. Now, whether those U.S. importers want to pass on the refunds to retailers and whether those retailers want to give something back to consumers would be up to the U.S. importers. They are the ones who paid the tariffs to the U.S. government.

@beckyromero yes, the court agreed , and the majority cited past repayments that should be treated as the standard, this time. They said they should
return the case to the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) to address the specific issue of refunds.
Cavanaugh used the word "chaos" in his dissent, seeming to indicate that doing hard stuff is unlikely.

For Cavanaugh, even drinking beer is complicated.

But this is why we keep tax records. Shouldn't be difficult at all. Detractors just want to make it seem like it is complicated.
