Maybe the tree pit was dry ?
Edit: i get, to the layman this looks stupid.
But that trees pit is on a slope, with evidently not much runoff to fill it.
And it's high summer in nz.
One storm isnt going to fill that pit for say, the next month or so till it gets replenished again.
The guy is prolly doing a rotation. Its in his roster to do these trees today for the next. .. however long🤷♀
Its a young tree.
Its in its first year of planting.
Its at its most vulnerable of dying from drought.
These trees are watered frequently during this time of their lives for survival.
As they Mature.... they need less frequent watering.
Eventually....unless there is draught, the tree should survive on one watering a year.
...as is standard council practice.
This isnt as stupid as it looks.
The majority of the rainfall from thr storm will just run off, as its hard rainfall and not the soil soaking kind.
This is just an example of the majority of people not understanding the dynamics here because they dont know about tree pits, how they work,
....or about tree maintenance and soil.
....and just doing the keyboard warrior thing.
Its too much to try and explain to people who are unknowing about all this ...
...as seen by my brief attempt here.
I feel sorry for the guy being blamed for looking stupid, when its only stupid to those who arent tree specialists.
