Federal capital is Canberra ACT, but before 1927 the federal parliament was based in Melbourne.

The ACT is a territory of land 'resumed' out of the state of NSW for the purpose of establishing a national capital so it's technically a seperate territory (not a state - like the Northern Territory aka NT the ACT does not have the full sovereign government and legislative structure of a state under the Australian constitution) . It's quite small - only about 2,400 sq km.

The state of NSW is just over 800,000 sq km's.

@butterflybaby75 After Canberra was established as the national capital in 1927,the Australian Capital Territory was formed 11 years later in 1938.
