A Brisbane woman found her home invaded by an eastern brown snake on Wednesday that had “tightly coiled” itself around her cat’s neck.

The venom of the Eastern Brown Snake is rated as the second most toxic of all snake venoms in the world, next only to that of Inland Taipan (which is also a native of Australia).

How many people and domestic animals get killed by snakes there each year?
walabby · 61-69, M
@meggie Two people per year in the whole of Australia. India loses about 50,000 per year.

I don't know how many pets die...

@walabby gosh i thought it would be a lot more for Australia. No idea India had so many snake deaths. Thank you.

@meggie Contrary to a widely-held view in other places, here in Australia,we aren't all constantly under threat from creatures that are trying to kill us.
walabby · 61-69, M
@meggie Crocodiles account for 1 or 2 deaths every year. Sharks, 2 or 3. Honey bees kill more people here than any other critter.

@walabby that's very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
