Threats to departing aircraft?

Watching the flares being fired from the departing aircraft suggest the treat of surface-to-air missiles being fired at the aircraft. Flares are used to distract and confuse heat-seeking missiles.

Why did Biden box the US and allies into an airport in the middle of a crowded city? This is beyond insane.

You are absolutely correct. Those flares are automatically released when a plane is "painted" by an anti-aircraft weapon.

Just confirms this airport "thing" is under tension, with US at great risk.

@questionWeaver I would like to think that there are a few gunships circling nearby but it appears that Biden is trying harder to not provoke the Taliban than he is at rescuing the poor people trapped behind the Taliban checkpoints. Again I'm reminded that both Obama and Clinton intentionally withheld support and rescue efforts for our people in Benghazi and Mogadishu.

And there are no carriers or amphib groups within flight range of Kabul ... to keep fighter aircraft aloft

@questionWeaver Very disturbing that Biden is ordering civilian airliners into Kabul ... airplanes that don't have anti-missile defenses.

Per quick check, the US has a fleet of 223 C17s. Without checking, the USAF also probably has 400+ C130s and at least a thousand transport helicopters. Many of the above can operate from sort runways or no runways.

Why are the people who are trying to leave Afghanistan forced to go to Kabul? They could have been 2-stepped to safety via helicopters and/or C-130. They could have been rounded up in smaller clusters and moved to safer locations. Why did Biden create the situation where the Taliban could serve as gate keepers and control who could and couldn't leave?

The only explanation I can come up with is that Biden wanted to abandon our Afghanistan friends. If you think that can't be, go check his position in 1975 about rescuing our Vietnamese friends who were trying to escape Vietnam.

If I was the military head ... I would request 25,000 reinforcements and a carrier group before any further efforts in Afghanistan

Taliban is still moving from remote regions towards Kabul ... it will be 4 days before they have enough forces in Kabul

ISIS can strike immediately

The military has to depart

They can stay no longer saving Biden face.

Good loyal American citizens and trusting Afghan America supporters my well be Bidenized. He, his cabinet and advisors, Schumer and Pelosi need to be arrested by the military and sent to GITMO. They have been compromised. @questionWeaver
