They may have been! But a house of that age in current times is a money out of fixes. I’d rather get a new one.

@nonsensiclesnail true, it’s not the best for the inexperienced and better if you can do some of your own work and repairs. Also depends on updates over the years, my electrical was all updated in 1990, at least the third time it was done in this house. I did plumbing, further electrical, plus other stuff myself.
@BackyardShaman as long as you know what you’re doing!! The house I was in was renovated, but poorly, by two guys who thought they knew what they were doing. We found, in its failing, that some of the electrical was original from 1911! The foundation, though fixed, still had cracks and the basement flooded every spring. If I washed the front porch water ran into the basement via light fixtures…
So when we had the opportunity to buy it we ran away. I loved the area, I loved the house!! But it was going to be too much for me.

Yikes!! I have a strong electrical background myself. All the old knob and tube wiring was bypassed here and replaced with appropriate gauge copper, all new 200 amp service, plus it was in the same family from 1870 till 1990 and really good work was done over the years with the one you left you did the right thing.@nonsensiclesnail
@BackyardShaman thank you! I couldn’t remember ‘knob and tube’. It was a scary find!

@nonsensiclesnail imagine one or 2 skinny swag lamps compared to what we need now, it is scary!
