For once, a Republican tells the truth: that the Republican Party is nothing more than a Personality Cult

Larry Hogan, a former Maryland governor, used an op-ed in the New York Times on Sunday to warn against Trump’s own 2024 campaign.

“I would never run for president to sell books or position myself for a cabinet role. I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican party than securing my own future in the Republican party,” Hogan wrote.

He went on to warn that the Republican party cannot be successful if it puts “personality before principle, if our elected officials are afraid to say publicly what they freely admit behind closed doors, and if we can’t learn from our mistakes because of the political cost of admitting facts to be true”.

“For too long, Republican voters have been denied a real debate about what our party stands for beyond loyalty to Mr Trump. A cult of personality is no substitute for a party of principle,” Hogan continued.

He added: “I am deeply concerned about this next election. We cannot afford to have Mr Trump as our nominee and suffer defeat for the fourth consecutive election cycle. To once again be a successful governing party, we must move on from Mr Trump.”

The truth, for once, from a Republican.

I know at least one lifelong Republican who realized this back in 2016. He voted for Biden in 2020 and has vowed not to vote Republican for any office as long as the party is beholden to Trump.

As for GOP public figures, George W Bush, Liz Cheney, Meghan McCain, and Mitt Romney, off the top of my head, have said essentially the same thing as Governor Hogan did.

Not all republicans are Trump friendly! But anybody that will make America look strong to our enemies is ok by me! But that would call for the people in unison. Unfortunately that will never happen though. Right now we are more divided than we ever was. I read somewhere that some movement wants to close some prison and let the prisoners go free. It was against the police . The wanted to let go all the cop killers. Like I said I read it somewhere. You can search it if you want to read it for yourself. I don’t have a link.

@eli1601 I suppose you're right. I think, after all, no true Republican would tell the truth. Yup, he is a RINO

Hogan is a class act. FYI, I’m a Dem, too.

@Fukfacewillie He was kept in check by the Democratic supermajority in both houses of Maryland's legislative branch, which ensured that he governed much more closely to the center than he might otherwise have been disposed to do.
