Amazing pieces of classical music - 7

Not many pieces of music are really performed to heavenly perfection like this one. In short, it's out of this world. Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, Part 2: No. 58a: "Und da sie an die Stätte kamen" (Und da sie an die Stätte kamen), performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra & Choir under the baton of Otto Klemperer in 1961. Not only does this showcase a group of musicians and conductor at their finest, but in this performance, it's also just heavenly to hear a 51-year-old Peter Pears (Evangelist) alongside a 36-year-old Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Jesus). The mood of the piece is one of a pervading darkness enveloping the earth, tempered by moments of sweetness, tenderness, and beauty. From the very first bars, which are weighty and majestic, one feels the weight and emotion of the Passion theme. This is an extremely emotional piece of music delivered at a fittingly steady tempo, making it perfect for the mood that we're overall in these days

@Thinkerbell My own favourite piece of Bach is still this one. His Christmas Oratorio anno 1965 with Karl Richter and the Munich Bach Orchestra, including that marvelous Fritz Wunderlich, one year before his untimely death. Although a reviewer once claimed that Richter was sometimes misled by the music's secular sources, many agree that this is the best recording and performance of this highly wondrous and joyful piece of music. Standing in the Bavarian Pilgrimage Church of Weis or Vierzehnheiligen, as I once did, one can certainly find peace with the thought that Christ was born
