Prokofiev - dark and brooding

We all know Peter and the Wolf, and the Lieutenant Kiej suite. Perhaps to his Ballet Romeo and Juliet.

But there are darker pieces. I heard his first violin sonata performed live the other Sunday.
Written at the bleakest moment in Stalins tyranny, it is a dark and brooding piece, taking about half an hour. Only the third movement is at all lyrical, offering some hope.

It sounds like a powerful and emotionally intense piece. The context of its creation adds another layer of depth to its meaning. The contrast between the darkness and the glimpse of hope in the third movement must be quite striking.
