It is sad and getting worse. And it’s multi-layered.
Some don’t want to ‘live normal’. They fear authority, sometimes with very good reasons. They don’t want to provide personal information. Especially now.
I rode the city bus a lot a few years back. There was an elderly man with a wheelchair that I frequently encountered. He said he was a veteran and homeless. As an ex-social worker, I wanted to help. I offered to try to help him get available benefits.
He was terrified of me. He shouted, “Stay away from me.”
I couldn’t blame him, but I couldn’t help him much either.

@Mamapolo2016 I often dream about (not that I want to) what it's like to live that sort of life.
And I think if someone is stuck in it for a long time, they might enjoy a relative freedom from things we have to deal with everyday. Bills, a job, going to the DMV, insurance and sorts of things like that.
I wouldn't blame them either if they refused help

Very sad. The TV series “Intervention” did a whole season in Vegas and this area was a prominent part of it.

@OlderSometimesWiser never seen that show. How did they intervene?
@caPnAhab Interventionists, at the request of obviously concerned friends and family, went into the area, trying to get those with alcohol and drug addictions to accept help. As you could imagine, the success rate was not good.

I heard too that some have jobs but cant afford the high rents. They are being bitten by huge spiders.

Yikes…I have wondered how many rattlesnakes and scorpions are in the underground areas where the homeless are living.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@cherokeepatti I wonder too. Snakes and scorpions usually try to steer of people

@caPnAhab When I was in Laughlin a lady told me about someone who had bought a home in the Las Vegas area and it was over a huge nest of scorpions. They tried for about 6 months to kill them out and get rid of them but failed and had to move out of the home that they had purchased. Someone else here in Oklahoma was offered a nice 4-bedroom brick home as part of his job. The home was originally for the school principal. The coach who had moved in the home was having problems with scorpions and ended up moving out even though there was no rent on it.
That’s so sad.. and now it being illegal to be homeless it puts even more pressure on them..

@deathfairy It looks like the Law doesn't bother them too much down there.
But you're right. This is where many are forced to go because they can't stay on the streets where tourists are

i think it's bs that america sends billions to other charities over seas and even to random unessential programs within america but doesn't take care of their own homeless or have official programs to safely home domestically abused women and children ..

I worked a substation with security back in 2007 near a tunnel entrance, they would come out at night to raid the dumpsters.
