Well The City Council Dropped The Idea Of Letting Homeless Or Transients Camp Out On Front Lawns Of Residents…
The city council was going to put the subject up for discussion. I imagine they heard plenty including “Let’s see city council members let people camp out in your front yards first and se how that works out for you”. It would have been with the permission of the homeowner. They would have limited to 2 persons per yard. The state paid for a cleanup on state property in the past month of a lot of tents and trash that were set up near the homeless shelter. They found hundreds of used needles and other such things in the area. 😖 Imagine allowing it on front lawns what would be tossed down for pets or children in the area to find and pick up. Not to mention the lack of sanitation and other problems. A young man in the older part of the city posted on a local site yesterday that he had offered to let a homeless man stay in his home. Kept finding things coming up missing and made him leave. Unintended consequences but no surprise. He may come home to find what is worth anything cleared out one day.
When I was working at the university a co-worker told me that she had heard water running when she got home. Someone had used her hydrant and hadn’t shut it off completely and it was running. So every day she started going out in the back yard to check it.It happened several time. One morning she told me she found pry marks where someone had tried to remove her window screen. I told her “Well you let a homeless man sleep in your disabled car for months now. What did you expect would happen eventually? It’s getting warmer weather and he probably went back there to wash himself off and get some water to drink. And maybe thought you might have some food or snacks inside to eat. And air conditioning in your duplex. And you have a daughter in grade school that walks a block to the duplex before you get home. Do you think it’s wise to draw people near your home when you don’t know his first name or background? There are sex offenders in this city that are homeless, probably can’t find anywhere that will accept them to live in an apartment or house due to rules for those on the registry.” She got a lump in her throat and said she would tell him he couldn’t sleep in the car any more. And got it towed and sold it for junk later that week. This was back 20 years ago when there weren’t that many transients & homeless but the situation here has now gotten to a critical stage.
