I Am Christian

I don't know if I'm just being narrow-minded in this situation: not lying are one of the biggest command of God. But what if you use it for your own safety and protection? Like to covering up some of your flaws or about something that could make you embarrass? Or to protect from some people that could take advantage of you?
Sorry, I'll admit I'm a little bit fool! Can someone help me more understand? It's seems like I became more narrow-minded when I became a Christian!
Thank you!

I've thought about this before. Of course God does not want us to lie but He also wants us to be shrewd in good ways in protecting ourselves and others, being a good witness, not adding hurt to an already hurting person, etc. God is not legalistic as some people are, and given that some scripture contradicts others, I believe He expects us to use discernment and wise judgment in all our dealings with the information we have at the time. A lie to us may not be a lie in God's eyes. He will examine our heart for our true motives.

@MikeSp yah, I also thought about that since God always examines and knows our hearts. So if we lie just for protecting ourselves which is our inner intention inside our hearts (and also which God sees), then it's fine, right? It is not sinful cause we have reasonable reasons why we have to lie which no one gets hurt anyway but just for protecting ourselves?

@morethanLes I think we are in agreement. We should not be looking to lie or make it a habit, but under the conditions described, it would be acceptable.
