I Am a Christian and I Love Jesus

I love you

So much in life evolves around these simple but meaningful words. So much in life depends on these words. I do believe that people deep down are looking for true love – all of their life. Being loved is a true need. And when love is missing, a vital part of life is missing. I do not expect that many would disagree at this point.

In my quiet time one morning I read Psalm 116. I have made it a habit to read one Psalm for a month and think about the words and the meaning and what my life has to do with the things written down.

This morning my attention was drawn to the first words. This is how Psalm 116 begins:

I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2 Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live

I thought about that God has loved us first (1. Joh 4:19) I thought about the words of Jesus who said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14,15+23 And I thought about the talk between Jesus and Peter in John 21, where Jesus asked, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

So much in life evolves around these words. And not only between a man and a woman. I asked myself, “When you say, I love the Lord, does your life match these words?” Who cares about nice words if it’s just that, nice words?! In the end it all depends if the words are meant serious. In the end it all depends if I live what I say and promise.

I heard of the difficulties of a married couple. The wife visited a friend with her little boy. When the 6 year old boy returned from the restroom, he did not wash his hands. The friend of the wife asked him to wash his hands. He said “No.” The friend asked him again. He said “No.” Then the mother said, “There is little use. See, his father does not wash his hands either. And when his dad takes his socks off, he drops them wherever he is at the moment and does not care to pick them up. It is hard to keep my son from following his dad’s example….” Needless to point out that this couple has problems.

It does not take much to promise “I will love you and honour you.” But it takes a whole lot to live that promise day in and day out. The author of Psalm 116 knew that it takes more than to just say, “I love the Lord…” Well, I think he knew that. Because in the next verse he stated, “I will call upon him as long as I live.” Altogether 5 times do I read these important two words in Psalm 116 “I will…”

Therefore I believe, when I say to Jesus, “I love you, Lord,” it is more than a fleeting picture of my feelings. It is a commitment also. It is a promise to show love.

Therefore I believe, when I say to my wife or my children “I love you” I not only make a statement about my feelings for them. I make a commitment also.

People should be careful when they say “I love you.”

Lord, help me to love those who I want to love. Help me that my words match my life.
