Sounds like wishful thinking to me, given the atrocities that "god" allows to happen and the millions of prayers it ignores.
@Adeptlinguist Not mythical, but there are definitely mythic elements in Gen ch 1 - 11 and Job.

And misreading it is pretty standard.

@Adeptlinguist Well, the Old Testament has competing notions of God, some based on typical pagan pantheons and some based upon what little was known of "the God of Abra[ha]m".

But chapter 12 has details which would not have been known to the ultimate recorders and scholars agree that Abram-cum-Abraham is a real person.

The misinterpretation of things and the thickness of the Old Testament are siren lures.
