We need to talk about Edwards......

I shouldn't find work for myself as it's my holiday and I need to unwind and prepare for more job interviews after my holiday in Portugal which begins later next week but I have been having a nosey through the theology on here- I came across a post where Jonathan Edwards was called a "tyrannical nut" "sick man" etc.

What's the problem- atheist post right? Well yes that type of language is to be expected from those posts and I wouldn't have commented on it but this was from a Christian post.

You see the preaching of Edwards doesn't feel good to a ear tickling preacher who acts like God does not have a concept of justice for sin.

This type of resistance to Godly preaching comes from someone who is clearly uncomfortable with God's sovereignty. Go and read in the book of Job the conversation between Satan and God- God is sovereign over all.

I find it interesting that the author does not quote John 3:36, Romans 1:18 and Ephesians 2:3 etc. Actually, read the whole book of Romans.

We love to talk about God's love and rightly so but we must not pretend God does not have other attributes like wrath. God is a infinitely holy and glorious God and sinning against him has consequences.

Maybe there is a fear of what believing in this will turn us into- I'm sure many of you lot view me as "Calvin and the chipmunks" from Viz. 🤭https://lh5.ggpht.com/harry.percival/SJwICq_mEZI/AAAAAAAAAE0/PHneXre5rbM/s1600-h/calvin%20and%20the%20chipmunks%20med-res%5B5%5D.jpg But in actuality the mother in law, who I used to have a bad relationship with, has seen the change! Realising God's sovereignty has really helped with my relationships.... and prepared me for my little nephews chasing me as velociraptors!

Warning people of hell as the consequence of sin will not put people off but preaching that God is a great big teddy bear who just wants to hug and kiss you won't drive people to the Saviour either! In hell where does it say people will be tormented in the presence of? Hint: Read Revelation 14:10.

What critics of Edwards selectively forget is he preached a message of mercy- he encouraged people to come to the throne of grace- there is salvation to be had!

Like the rest of us Edwards was a sinful man and if we viewed his life 24/7 on CCTV we'd be dissapointed but God used him in the great awakening to wake people up to their spiritual state- the great awakening did not consist of feel good preaching!
