Tower Of Babel

Was the Tower of Babel possible, ancient structures that still exist today indicates yes it was. And we do not know how many structures have been lost.
Scripture never told us exactly how tall the Tower of Babel was. For some reason there are those who want to put extraordinary heights upon it in order to make it unbelievable. Ancient people were not stupid nor were they lazy but then they couldn't be, they actually had to physical challenging work to accomplish their goals. And they built some extraordinary things some of which still stands today.
Man continually saw Angels and God come down from the sky quite often I'm sure and decided that they were going to go up and the only way they could do it was to build a structure that would take them up, and they attempted it. God on the other hand had to stop it, for one man was doing an impossible task. God knew if by chance man would actually build an extraordinarily tall structure he wouldn't survive or complete it, lack of oxygen.
So in order to stop man God confused their language. It would seem even without scripture the first humans or humanoids had to have a way of communicating, one language. Even migrating from Africa whatever languages they had would go with them words may change over time but basically the language would be the same.
We have distinct different languages, seems as if something made those distinct differences. Has science explained it?
