Mental health and struggle of assurance.

Tonight at Bible study learnt of a man called William Cowper, a friend of John Newton- yes 'Amazing Grace' John Newton.

Cowper came to Christ after he was hospitalised after a suicide attempt.

Cowper was a Christian with mental health issues- severe depression and withdrawing from society after a loss.

Despite his mental health issues he contributed greatly to Christian literature but because of his mental torments he had a llifelong struggle of assurance of faith.

However on his death- the doctor Dr Samuel Johnson who examined his body said Cowper's face was "Calm and pleasantly surprised" "wore a look of holy surprise," reflecting a serene and peaceful expression, as if he had found unexpected comfort or revelation at the end of his life.

Cowper, despite his lifelong struggle had made it home- he now knew with full knowledge that he was only saved by faith alone in Christ- not his feelings!

Hope this is of encouragement to some!
