A beautiful welcome to the month of May

A commentary on the beginning of May from Spurgeon.

"Lo, the flowery month is come! March winds and April showers have done their work, and the earth is all bedecked with beauty. Come my soul, put on thine holiday attire and go forth to gather garlands of heavenly thoughts. Thou knowest whither to betake thyself, for to thee "the beds of spices" are well known, and thou hast so often smelt the perfume of "the sweet flowers," that thou wilt go at once to thy well-beloved and find all loveliness, all joy in him. "

"In Jesus I find not only fragrance, but a bed of spices; not one flower, but all manner of sweet flowers. He is to me my rose and my lily, my heartsease and my cluster of camphire. When he is with me it is May all the year round, and my soul goes forth to wash her happy face in the morning-dew of his grace, and to solace herself with the singing of the birds of his promises."

What a beautiful analogy by Spurgeon, I particularly liked "When he is with me it is May all the year round", as Christ is like beams of sunlight for our soul!

How can we grow in our love for Christ? Here are some tips

. Read the Bible everyday- if you claim to be A Christian and truly believe the Bible is his word then you will read the Bible everyday!

. Pray everyday- if you are single by yourself and at church but if married make sure you have family prayer time!

. Attend a faithful, Gospel centred church- One that believes the Bible is the word of God- it is a beautiful thing being with God's people and the encouragement that they can give you and you can give them.

If you are physically well and live in a safe Country there is no excuse to not attend a church:

. The New Testament ASSUMES you ARE part of a local church and gives instructions to pastors and how to live as a Christian community.

. I have seen the results of Christians that don't fellowship and are lone wolves- it's not pretty! We are not called to walk alone in the Christian life.

. I once tried to make the case for someone to go to church and they said "God is my pastor" that was deeply misguided. Here are a few translation phrases of what that statement usually means - "I won't let anyone correct me" "I'm above being taught" "I’ve outgrown the need for other believers to challenge or support me", ultimately "I don't need what you need- I'm on a higher spiritual plane" and maybe even "I’m so spiritually advanced that the institution of church is beneath me"

For a more balanced diet of discipleship and fellowship as Christians, we mustn't neglect our salads.

Hebrews 10:22-25 NIV
[Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
[23] Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
[24] And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,
[25] not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
@afarcryfrom Amen! Great verses!
