The loving family life of Spurgeon

A great article from the 'Banner Of Truth' magazine about Spurgeon, in my opinion one of Britain's finest preachers, if not the best!

. It was nice to see Spurgeon's loving encouragement to his wife when he went to a far away place to preach the Gospel.

. The article reveals our Triune God does have a sense of humour- Spurgeon always asked his wife what he could bring back for her from his trips- one time she joked and said an opal ring and a piping bullfinch- well, a few days later Spurgeon received an opal ring from a woman he used to minister to and without prompting a family member gave the Spurgeons a piping bullfinch as a gift!

. Spurgeon as a minister made the key important point of not treating his wife as a burden or inconvenience- instead he viewed her as a partner in his life and ministry!

. As a father Spurgeon loved his children too and spent time with them.

In my view the point the author makes about family life is very important- great Christian men like Whitefield and Wesley had very volatile marriages to say the least! 😅

This article helped me remember the importance of family for me as a Christian, particularly for my oldest nephew who looks up to me as a role model as he doesn't have a father figure. What good would it be if I told my sister in law about the great Bible study, sermon, etc but completely ignored and blanked my nephew who looks up to me? Instead she sees me spending time with him and always says how grateful she is to me and my wife. This makes my wife happy too so brownie points for me! 🤭

So soon no doubt time to kick a football around with him or violate every human rights law possible by him dealing with my illegally parked toy car with his tank!

Spurgeon was a great gift to mankind.
His Treasury of David and Lectures to My Students are two of my favorite books.
@daydeeo Well the Psalms is my favourite book in the OT, I really need to read Spurgeon's commentary on it!

@BritishFailedAesthetic It's my favorite, too.
And, yes, you really should. It’san amazing work of both breadth and depth. You can dip into it anywhere for a light snack or a multi-course banquet.
