The vapour of this life

Reading my 'Memento Mori' devotional for Lent I read the author's commentary which really put things in perspective.

After Christ saying about his suffering to come, what do James and John do? The two fully grown men ask through their mum if they can sit at his right and left hand- the highest request possible!

Presumably through the above request, they only had an earthly political understanding about the Messiah at that particular time- which brings us to the author's point.

If James and John had reflected that this life is but a vapour and eternity awaits they would not have had such concerns.

But how often do we care about the things of the world rather than think about eternity? When we obsess about worldly issues and put them above God - politics, hobbies, etc we really are missing out on the grand scheme of things relating to eternity and our thrice holy, Triune God!
