Why is the Christian devil called the "Prince of Darkness?"

Wouldn't he be the King of Darkness? Or perhaps the President or Emperor? Is Darkness a principality, like Monaco?

A King has authority a prince does not.. Satan has limited authority / agency .. God does not allow satan a free hand on earth nor does he have any ultimate power any where else..

An example is in the book of Job.. God allowed satan to do certain things to Job but within limits.. For instance satan was not allowed to kill Job..
