"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it, shall eat the fruit thereof." Proverbs 18:21

It means that words have a significant impact, capable of bringing either positive and life-giving results, or negative and destructive consequences, emphasizing the importance of choosing your words carefully. It highlights the power of speech to build up or tear down others. What words are you speaking over yourself or others? It matters greatly.

Positive Impact

Kind, encouraging words can uplift and inspire others, bringing "life."

Negative Impact

Harsh, hurtful words can damage yourself, others, relationships, and cause pain, representing "death."

Responsibility in Speech

This scripture in Proverbs, encourages mindful communication, considering the potential impact of your words. Proverbs 18:21 holds true, whether we're speaking of spiritual, physical, or emotional “life and death.”

When a believer is living close to God, and God's will to be done is important in his or her life, as revealed in the Word of God, then the tongue will be used for good, to speak gracious words of blessing, comfort, and edification.

There is a "time to keep silence, and a time to speak" (Eccl 3.7). The tongue can also be a wicked thing, used to spread gossip, to hurt others. We reap what we sow. That does not go unnoticed by God. There's no such thing as sinning "just a little bit". We are responsible for what we say and do. I don't know who in their right mind, would deliberately want to say words to hurt others. This is only proof of immaturity and insecurity...and they that love it, shall eat the fruit thereof." Proverbs 18:21.

Sin brings condemnation to ourselves, and grief and guilt soon follow. When was the last time you prayed for God's blessings over your life or others? When we follow God's wise guidance and direction for our lives, we reap the richest blessings, and experience true peace in our spirit. Jesus is the divine source of true peace. It will never be found elsewhere.

Beyond Worldly Circumstances

Peace offered by God, is a gift that surpasses all human understanding.

True peace is not dependent on external situations or possessions, but rather on an internal connection with God. It is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior, as He is considered the source of "the peace of God that surpasses all understanding" and can only be accessed through faith in Him...a connection and commitment to God. We could search our whole lives to try to find true peace, but Christ said it cannot be found apart from Him. So if we desire peace in our spirit and life, we must go directly to the source of peace and Light...Jesus Christ.
