What does it mean to ask Jesus for forgiveness?

I have always asked myself what does forgiveness mean? What does it mean to forgive someone? Then, this idea came to me as to its possible meaning. When Jesus says for you to ask for forgiveness. It does not mean you are asking Jesus to forgive you. You are asking Jesus for forgiveness. You are asking Jesus to give you the ability to forgive. When Jesus died on the cross, he said Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. Forgiveness means to let go of all that has been done to you so that you may rise. Just as Jesus forgave all that was done to him so that he could rise.

When you forgive someone you are not letting them off the hook for all the evil they have done. You are letting go of all the evil they have done so that you may rise. Just as all who have done wrong must forgive all that has been done wrong to them.

It is always good to ask Jesus for forgiveness.
Number one it is an acknowledgement of your Faith that he is and who he is.
Forgiveness is not for your benefit when you give it to others. There is no promise of healing. It means that the person that harmed you is not responsible to carry the burden of their act.
They owe you nothing.
I will state it takes a big personal burden off when you forgive and make a lot of personal progress possible.

Well that's certainly part of it for sure but the main part is understanding that no one is good enough on their on or by their own merit to stand before God.
Each of us will probably sin daily. Sin is evil and not good so we must ask God/Jesus to forgive us for past present and future sin.
Yes this also means forgiving others.
