Why are there so many different Christian denominations?

I was talking with my sister about how Christianity is unique in that there is a wide range of denominations and beliefs. The downside though, is that those different beliefs tend to clash. I've observed arguments between Christians of different denominations all because one has a totally different belief system and it's like a foreign language.

There's big money in having your own denomination. Is it so surprising that there would be so many?
@HollyW I don't think it's so much money, but having people around you who think like you do.

@latinbutterfly I agree that ego does play a role, but in the USA alone the religion industry takes in about three trillion dollars a year. That's a huge incentive to carve out a piece of the action.
@HollyW That is true. Those huge mega churches immediately come to mind for me.
