In context, Paul was talking about the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues. Paul is making a point: If everyone speaks in tongues, and there is no one there to interpret the tongues, what's the point of speaking in tongues? It's like singing praises to God ... if you are singing, you need to know what you are singing about. You are not just singing fruitlessly without understanding of the words. And if you are praying, you should know what you're praying about -- the meaning of your prayer. So that brings us to Paul's point: So, What shall I do? ... What is the purpose of it? There has to be a purpose and that purpose cannot be realized if you don't understand what you are saying. Speaking in tongues - someone needs to be there to interpret those tongues, otherwise, there's no purpose.

1 Cor 14:6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

@RocktheHouse Doesn't the Bible say God has given us all things meaning everyone probably has the gift of tongues and interpretation?
@karysma His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness (2 Peter 1:3; NIV).

That in which we have, we must preserve. My grandmother used to say, "If you don't have much, take care of what you do have."

God works in mysterious ways. Sometimes God forces us to a point where we must pray and fast and seek him earnestly with all our mind and hearts so that we won't become complacent and lackadaisical. Do you have children? You may cook for your children and clean for them but at some point, you don't want to spoil them to the point where they cannot do for themselves. God wants us to have an independent mindset. We are being prepared for God-hood. So, what we need he will provide, but sometimes we have to work to preserve those things through prayer and supplication.

@RocktheHouse No I don't have kids but I do know that at some point you have to teach them to do things on their own so they can become responsible adults. I agree that God wants us to show him how much we want something only then does he create the right environment for us to birth that gift. I sometimes wish he'd throw things on my lap but then I realise that I'll probably abuse it 😅.
@karysma You are so right. Those struggles, trials and tribulations have made us stronger and humble. We are not perfect but we must continue seeking him and fighting for his glory. It's like Sofia on Color Purple said, "All my life I had to fight..." Being a Christian means you will continue to fight so you may as well get used to it. Be a fighter and a lover.
