Why Would A Christian Do This?

Discourage other Christians from telling the world about the rapture of the church and the 7 year of tribulation written in scripture reserved for those left behind?

Simple.

They're not living right and aren't sure they'll make it on the first flight. They get uncomfortable hearing about the rapture because they're so comfortable living a life of sin.

Back in 1992-93 they were so sure the rapture was going to be around that time, starting the 7 year tribulation. Because by 2000 it would all be over. Well, here we are.

@Punches The world hadn't heard the gospel just yet so it was impossible. He gave us a list of things that should happen before he comes and one of them was the gospel reaching the ends of the earth. Now there's the internet you can reach millions with just a click.

@Punches They also thought it was going to happen in 2012 as well. Rapture is not actually happening for at least another 500 years. There's an actual timeline with actual date correlations. Fanatical Christians just are super desperate to see Jesus in their lifetime. Sorry guys, God isn't going to change his timeline for returning for you. You aren't special.

@Punches Back in my day the rapture date was 1988. There were innumerable books published "proving" that this would happen. The main argument was that one generation had passed since Isreal became a country and a biblical generation is 40 years... What happened? Nothing.

@walabby I do remember that, there was even a book called 88 reasons the Rapture will be in 1988. Then in 1989 there was an updated version of that book. Guess what it was called?

@Punches .. 89 reasons ?.. 😄

@walabby Yes but for some reason that one didn't sell quite as well.

I remember though in the early 90's I asked my dad, "If the rapture is going to happen and all that, how come people are living like nothing is going on?"

All he said was, "Oh they have been saying that for 2,000 years"
