Mass readings today: forever poignant

Today's Catholic Mass readings for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time center on the themes of hospitality, dying to sin, and taking up our crosses to follow Christ.

Reading 1: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16aThe prophet Elisha frequently visits the town of Shunem. A wealthy and influential woman recognizes him as a "holy man of God" and provides him with a dedicated room to stay in. In gratitude for her profound hospitality, Elisha promises that she and her aging husband will be blessed with a son.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 89:2-3, 16-17, 18-19
Response: "Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord."A joyful psalm praising God's faithfulness and steadfast love. It reminds the faithful of the covenant and the blessings of walking in the light of God's countenance.

Reading 2: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11St. Paul teaches that through baptism, we are joined to Christ's death and buried with Him so that we may walk in a "newness of life". He emphasizes that we must consider ourselves "dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus".

Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42Jesus calls His disciples to make Him their absolute priority, stating that whoever does not take up their cross and follow Him is not worthy of Him.

He concludes with encouraging words about hospitality, assuring that anyone who welcomes a prophet or even gives a "cup of cold water" to a disciple will receive a great reward.
