The beginning of Lent. What are you doing for Lent?
Do you follow the guidelines for commemorating the season. My fiancé has told me that since I am pregnant I have to keep my nutrient intake so I shouldn’t give up anything.
Pregnant and nursing women are exempt from traditional Catholic Lenten fasting and abstinence rules (meat on Fridays) to prioritize the health of themselves and their babies.
Instead, they are encouraged to focus on prayer, almsgiving, or non-food sacrifices. Pregnancy itself is considered a significant sacrifice.
Key Considerations for Lent and Pregnancy:
Exemptions: The Code of Canon Law exempts those who are pregnant or nursing from fasting (only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) and abstinence (no meat).
Alternatives to Fasting: Many choose to offer up the physical discomforts of pregnancy (nausea, fatigue). Other options include giving up luxuries like coffee, sweets, or social media rather than food.
Alternative Sacrifices:
Prayer: Focus on daily prayer, reading scripture, or attending extra services.
Almsgiving: Donate to charity or volunteer time.
Penance: Fast from habits like screen time or social media instead of food.
Spirituality: The focus is on finding a "fruitful" Lent that aligns with your physical capacity.
It is recommended to focus on nutrition for the baby, and any sacrifice should not endanger health.
