Pope Leo to disband Opus Dei

Opus Dei is a secretive and influential prelature of the Catholic Church that was established in 1928. Unlike other prelatures, it reports directly to the Pope. In the US, Opus Dei has exerted influence on Supreme Court nominations through Leonard Leo, a member who provided Trump with the names of judicial nominees. Deceased Justice Antonin Scalia was also a member. Opus Dei is also active in promoting other conservative causes.

While Opus Dei has not been plagued with allegations of sexual abuse, there have been reports of "spiritual" and psychological abuse where members have been coerced into servitude and "mortification of the flesh." Opus Dei also has a checkered past, with allegations that the group facilitated illegal adoptions in Francoist Spain, among other abuses.

Pope Francis attempted to address these issues by calling for Opus Dei to increase transparency and modify some of its practices, although the organization successfully delayed these changes. Reportedly, Francis was on the verge of dissolving the group when he died. Pope Leo is set to disband the group in the coming weeks; this would be the most sweeping internal reform of Leo's papacy so far.

Confusing. I thought that Opus Dei does not recognize the Pope's authority.
@Northwest No, it's a legitimate Catholic organization. You might be thinking of sedevacantists like the Palmarians and others that reject Vatican II.

Probably for the best. The Catholic church should not have undue influence on American politics.
