A Catholics opinion of Thomas Merton

Although not Catholic (and not Christian, in fact a non-theist) I have a great deal of time for the Catholic Trappist monk Thomas Merton. His Journals and Letters particularly have often been an inspiration for me. I am wondering what those who actually identify as Catholics think of him.
