Ft Hood Shooter sentenced to firing squad; but will it really happen?
Nidal Hasan, an US Army Major, a physician (psychiatrist), and a graduate of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD killed 13 people at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009. He was severely injured in the attack and paralyzed.
A jury of 13 officers convicted Hassan of multiple charges of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder. He was not tried on charges of terrorism, however. The jury recommended he be discharged from the Army and receive the death penalty.
Last month, President Trump authorized Death by Firing Squad. If Hasan's execution is carried out, he would be the first member of the US Armed Forces to be executed since John A. Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder in 1961. Multiple former members of the military are imprisoned on Death Row.
Hasan represented himself at his trial, admitted to the crime, and pleaded guilty. He desired the death penalty and requested it, believing that would make him a martyr.
A date in late December has been set, but it’s unknown if there will be any appeals or other delays at this time. The tentative date and time are December 3, 2026 @ 1300 CST.
