There are some soldiers like that.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the professor/general of the American Civil war, led his regiments and brigades from the front, as was military custom at that time.

He was wounded six times, but survived the war by almost 50 years (to 1914), despite a painful bladder wound that never properly healed.
