My great uncle served and died in WWII and is buried in Italy. My uncle served in Korea and is buried the veteran’s cemetery. My father’s best friend died in his arms in Vietnam and sleeps in Arlington. Two of my dearest friends were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan…their ashes came home. Many others live heavily in my heart.

@Pinkstarburst Do you know what unit your uncle was in, when in Italy?

It's a long shot, but my dad was in the 88th infantry in Italy
@DogMan No, I don’t. My grandfather would tell the story of being picked up by a transport. While he and driver talked, my great uncle’s name came up. The driver knew him and told my grandfather how he died. His telegram arrived to my great grandmother before the Army’s.

@Pinkstarburst Luckily my dad made it back, although he was wounded twice.

He was a normal guy, but he did have nightmares off and on until the day he passed.

They witnessed, and participated in, some very brutal stuff, stuff that broke many men
mentally.
@DogMan It's because of old men's squabbles that young men die.
@DogMan My father is career Marine. I’ve seen first hand what war does to the human heart and mind.

@Pinkstarburst I think a lot of it is, undeserved guilt, about something they did, or
didn't do right. Dad said he forgave himself for the things he had to do, which
helped him live a normal life, but it didn't stop the nightmares. I have read extensively
about his unit, the Germans called them "The Blue Devils" They were forced into
hand to hand, and bayonet combat on multiple occasions.
