as a veteran living 100 miles from nearest VA facility, do i need health insurance in case of something major happening to me??

Yeah it's a good idea to have something. I'm over 50% so I get all my health care through the va. Lucky for me I live close to a VA hospital. If you can get that Community Care that might help. But I hear getting that is a pain in the ass.
