Americans love to make fun of the french military.

But remember without the french military, Americans would still be British.

Let us focus on one singular instance, the second world war. Monster insists that US involvement only hastened the end of the war, and one could argue that as well for the US revolution, but let's not bother with that track. Let us count the Frenchmen who died in the US. It is about 2000. If we express that as a fraction of the population of France at the time, 28million, then it is 0.0007%. In 1940s Europe, 210,000 Americans died. As a portion of population that is 0.0016%, quite a bit more. And if the blood saved by these Americans for the French is a much smaller 2,000, then that would (in a cold calculation of lives indeed), have quite returned France's sacrifice in the 18th century.

But to count lives in such a way is beyond unpalatable, it seems quite wrong indeed. Setting it aside, I might also point out that it was the French monarchy who gave such aid to the US, and not the Republic. During which revolution by the way, the revolutionaries threatened to execute US diplomats.
