Did the US nuke Japan as a warning to the Soviets?

In a way . They did not want Russia involved in that theatre ... and Japan was negotiating with Russia . But the invasion of Japan was estimated to cost 1 million American lives ... which also swayed Trueman’s decision to drop the bombs

Stalin certainly knew about the A-bomb, the Venona intercepts show that. What he didnt understand was just how devastating they were.@TexChik
