Was Hitler's interference in the planning of German defences one of the largest factors in German defeat during the 1944 invasion of Normandy?

Not a WW2 buff but I remember reading that there were a whole LOT of elements at play on D-Day. From the creation of a "fake" attack to the leaders not even being there when it went down.
