Coast Guard

It's a shame that the majority of people don't know everything that the CoastcGuard does or is capable of doing. When I tell people (civilians) I'm enlisting in the Coast Guard, they say if I'm joining to join a real branch like the army or marines. Some seem disappointed when they ask and I tell them. Some seem surprised, like the kind of surprised that's like "why join the Coast Guard?". Those same people are also very surprised when I tell them all the things the CG does like guarding ports or naval ships overseas or fighting in every war since its creation. No offense to any other branch but the Coast Guard by far does more on a daily basis and makes more of a difference, not saying the other branches aren't important they are, but the Coast Guard saves lives and stops drugs/terrorists/protects our coasts on a daily basis. They don't train all day for hypothetical wars the may or may not happen (aside from the ones in the Middle East that are fighting). I have tons of respect for the other branches as do other people but I think the CG definitely needs more respect than they get. Especially when this is the service that does more with a lot less and still performs their jobs exceptionally well.

Spot on. CG men and women are very talented and perform many varied tasks. I have assisted them while flying my plane. A couple friends were rescued by them off the FL coast a few months ago when they got lost. I've taken several youth groups to the local CG Air Station for tours. I too wish more citizens knew of this great resource.

@MikeSp and honestly that's just the kind of think the CG needs is a publicity boost. Guarantee at least one of those kids in the youth group will grow up wanting to be apart of the CG now.

@Daniel1120 I've been taking these groups for almost 30 years now. Over 10 so far have joined the CG with half making it to retirement or are going to. When do you graduate and what is your specialty?

@MikeSp leaving for basic on April 10th. Should graduate in June. At the moment I'm planning on being a BM but will keep my options open as a non rate. My recruiter said after 4 years I'll be officially qualified to go to OCS because of my college credits and high ASVAB score. Ultimately I'm gonna be trying for a pilot spot.

@Daniel1120 Excellent. I'm rooting for you.
