You can still give them the GI bill and/or cash value of education services they would have received and let them decide how to use it. Or if not that, you could sweeten the pension plan, or improve veteran's care.

@CoxswainOtter Depending on what state you live in, that's about the size of the monthly stipend. That stipend should continue for the duration of eligible enrollment.

@CoxswainOtter I know they take the $1,200, and I know they pay out education benefits, which include money for fees and books, and sometimes living expenses too. But what do you think the scholarship is? It's money paid to the university in your name. Could just give it to you instead.

@CoxswainOtter Wouldn't be a handout, it'd be compensation they earned. And yeah, they pay the universities. That's why for-profit universities like University of Phoenix flock to veterans, for their GI bills.

@CoxswainOtter It's an option. Then they can use it to start on buying a house, or invest it, or whatever they want.
