Feel like melting into a hole

I'm going to be so defeated if this all falls apart.

I got offered the job. Today I get an email from them saying they need to see my PhD acceptance letter before they can officially give me the job. Because it's a one-year position expected to end when I begin my studies. Problem is, I only have a verbal agreement with my potential advisor and not an official letter. I mentioned during the interview that it was a verbal agreement. I just emailed him asking if he can give me that, although I doubt he will be able to. If he says no I lose everything and I'm stuck at this current job. Just keeping my fingers crossed but I feel miserable right now.

If you are beginning a phD program in about a year why can't someone put that in writing for you? There must be some official way for this to be made known....

@REMsleep I called my potential PhD advisor (and had meetings with him) before I even applied for this job and he basically promised that I would start in a year. But I'd still have to fill in paperwork later this year like everyone else, even though he's already assured me that I'm going to be his student. To get an official letter stating that might be a hurdle for him, since it isn't technically official yet.

I sent an email asking him for a letter (or even a letter expressing strong intent to take me as his student). He hasn't responded yet. I'm worried that he'll say it isn't possible and then everything will fall apart
