It's easy to frame things that way if someone is fighting a war against a nuclear power. What Zelensky is actually doing is defending the sovereignty of his country, as any good leader would do. Tell me another leader and country that would willingly give up huge parts of their territory without a fight? Accepting such a position for the sake of an end to the fighting is capitulation and rarely does it lead to any good long term outcome. Should we have just let Germany keep Poland for the sake of peace? Why did our grandparents bother fighting and dying when we could have all just conceded territory so nobody would die? Would America concede entire states to Russia rather than fight for them, even if that meant losing?
@Peterthe1 How do you hold an election in a country that is at war? How do you set up polling stations in occupied territories or areas which are being bombed daily? How do people get to those polling stations without risking being killed? How do you prevent the direct influence of Russia in those elections? It is utterly naive to think that elections can be held in Ukraine right now in any way that would be fair and comprehensive.
@Peterthe1 A phone? Are you thinking that phone services and Internet are actually working in all of these areas under direct attack? How are they charging their phones with no power? Do you even understand what's going on in Ukraine right now?
How will EU nations help conduct an election when Russia won't let them set foot in Ukraine? Are they supposed to help by email or something?
Do you think that Russia cares about the will of the Ukrainian people? When you invade another country, do you stop to consider the will of the people?

@Peterthe1 Of course Russia will claim that. There is no evidence to support that though.
Oh, and by the way, America hasn't provided $350 billion of support to Ukraine. Europe as as whole has provided more financial support to Ukraine. The US has provided the most as an individual country but as a percentage of GDP they are way down the list behind European countries.

@Peterthe1 Russia has absolute red lines for Ukraine joining any association or body including the EU or NATO. They won't allow that in any peace deal. The only deal that Russia will accept is one where their terms are met because they don't need to accept anything less. They are prepared to put up with the sanctions and the costs of war. America and Ukraine have no leverage over Russia. The only reason that Russia have come to the table at all is for incentives. If they can get rid of the sanctions and still keep everything that they've taken then they get a victory. They can then rebuild their forces and come again for the rest of Ukraine.
