I Want to Start My Own Business

I'm middle aged and not any longer a prime candidate for being hired. I also live in a town of 16,000 people. Not good being out of work! I had a thought of buying a nice top grade carpet cleaner machine and going in to business for myself. The Colorado workforce center is a joke, every single post they have on the board is void. The positions are filled before you get there. The young guys have all the luck, and females in this town have even more luck. It gets scary at my age when it starts becoming real tough to find a job. Business owners get stuck with 40% income theft from the IRS (Illegal revenue service) and that's a hell of a dent for someone just trying to get by, but I think the small investment and efforts just might be worth it. I think a lot of it has to do with advertising to maybe 3 or 4 nearby cities too, and doing a great job with just enough markup to be fair and equal a half way decent income. Besides, bosses are getting stupider by the year.

I can no longer afford to live in Denver and I'm thinking about a small Colorado town. I'm retired and don't have to work, but what's the cost of living where you are?
SW-User
@hunkalove Canon City, well it's less expensive than Denver for sure. I lived up there too and won't ever go back

@SW-User I hadn't considered Canon City. I'm thinking maybe Sterling, the eastern plains. I'll have to check into Canon City.

@hunkalove well this is a prison town, about 13 prisons surround the area. It's also a retirement town but it seems the population of young kids and people between teens and 30's has exploded here. We're even known for the high school sex scandal worldwide lmao,

Certainly worth thinking about. Also the opportunity of other help for any clients. I know one guy here (UK) who does carpet cleaning as his main deal, but helps out a few landlords and clients. Furniture moves basic DIY etc

Don't cut margins too fine, I've done this and honour the prices I've given people but when I needed to hire a roofer the cost made my eyes water and I still had trouble getting one to do the job.

I shampooed my own house carpets and was sore for days afterwards .. Its not easy work 😄😄
SW-User
@YoMomma No it's not, but I can handle it. I used to throw 100 pound propane tanks around for a living

SW-User
Ahh just let it be until I get a machine and I'll give a discount lol
