Should I fire my contractors?

I am a business owner of a granite installation company. Everyone that works for us is contracted help.
We have 3 crews (2 man teams per truck) they install granite and get paid a percentage based on the square footage they put in. recently the economy has taken a turn and we are not getting as much work as we used to so i am spreading the work thin amongst all my crews. The problem is that now my company is not making as much money and in return i am not taking a paycheck in order to support my family. I am also dipping into my reserve/safety fund in order to pay the company bills. This is quickly running low.
Here is my question.
In order to support my family and to sustain my company long-term (essentially riding out this storm) I need to get back on a crew myself. This would mean letting go of a team and equally distributing the square footage between myself and the other 2 teams.
I am struggling with this idea because it would mean firing 2 people and taking away potential money from the others in order for my company to keep more of the profits.
I am a family man and I look out for those that work for me, but if I don't make a change soon I could lose my company completely.
Am I doing the right thing?

no matter what you do your going to be losing, your geographical has to increase to find more business, even though you are going to hear " I have a guy".. So this means your going to have to do more, like we tile and tile better (use silicone over latex caulking,) the idea is to do more and show your better at a small % higher. everything you do has to be lean and more work. good luck. and think,look and determine even if you have to get the guys another job. hay it tough,
