@BuzzedLightyear you are right. I gave them too much credit. It would appear the algorithm used to calculate the tariffs was developed by an AI bot to address the issue of the large (and perpetually growing) US trade deficit. Ironically, the tariffs won’t change the trade deficit much as it is well known how to address trade deficits and tariffs aren’t one of the three known policy solutions.(you would think an AI bot would know that.) Other policies being pursued by the Trump Administration (extending the 2017 tax cuts) will, however, increase the trade deficit.
