3) Hummingbird (Wikipedia entry)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird

"Hummingbirds are New World birds that constitute the family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring in the 7.5–13 cm (3–5 in) range. Indeed, the smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird, the 5-cm bee hummingbird weighing less than a U.S. penny (2.5 g).

They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings which flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing-flapping rates, typically around 50 times per second, allowing them also to fly at speeds
exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h; 34 mph),[1] backwards.[2]

Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any homeothermic animal.[3] To conserve energy when food is scarce, and nightly when not foraging, they go into torpor, a state similar to hibernation, slowing metabolic rate to 1/15th of its normal rate.[4]"

There's hummingbirds at work and they will get in the mechanic shop and fly near the skylights back and forth for an hour or more thinking they can get out. They also love to feed on the blooming flowers in the garden. They love coleus flowers.

@Gemma So small and cute indeed! As I remember from EP, you have been all over a certain country with many states. Did you see them while there?

I see them at the coast when we go on holiday, if I'm lucky. They are fascinating and beautiful, totally agree.

@Scribbles
No more hummers in your area? That is definitely something we will have to explore further once the PMs open. Right now, one-to-one communication is difficult, to say the least. :D As someone who loves "All Things Science", I am addicted to research of all types. :P You must tell me what you discover... in the PMs.
GlassDog · 46-50, M
Alas not. I'm not in the Americas.
QueenOfSmiles · 46-50, F
