Synthetic life without sperm or egg

Natural and synthetic mouse embryos grown by developmental biologist Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz’s research group.
Two research groups have developed mouse embryos “In vitro” from stem cells. They have lives of 8 1/2 days out of a 20 day gestation period. They also face a challenge of getting beyond the 11 day hurdle without a placenta.
This would allow a lab to not have the need for animals from outside sources to test with since they can be grown in house.
The fact that two groups replicated results validates the process. Good research is always replicated by a second group.
This also leads to cures for humans and there is a 14 day rule on human stem cells currently in regards to ethical practices.

Even if it's managed to stop it in this country your not going to stop it in countries like China or even Russia for that matter.

It pretty well known the Chinese have little moral values regarding this. They have already done DNA manipulation itself.

@DeWayfarer I wasn’t going to say China but yes they have practically no boundaries when it comes to this science. This is the first time it has been public ally proclaimed. A brain, a beating heart for a mouse. It is frightening to know what is actually possible even now.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic it's been talked about in other areas. More specifically in Chinese development of super soldiers.

@DeWayfarer
I remember the plasticized body exhibit and I see a leadership not worried about demeaning a persons life that is vulnerable to exploitation.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic no they are not likely to push it. Because that would mean the Chinese will be never caught up to.

And so again how are any going to stop China?
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
Thank goodness there is an ocean that separates us. Strength is determined by Navies. I have seen exoskeletons as armor such as Riley in Aliens but it wouldn’t be a stretch to see bodies altered also!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic we do have friends that share several conjoining continents though. It is a global economy.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
We are breaking off of that global economic dependence though with the CHIPS legislation.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic that's barely a start. A drop of water in a ocean of water.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
I don’t know why we even gotten a position the first place I mean we were the first country made those type of semi conductors. I understand The legislation to be almost $100 billion in Columbus we have a new Intel plant so at least we are starting to operate smarter.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic our strength has always been in ideas. We let that become our export. All the while we import the actual products from all over the world.

California gets vegetables from Argentina in the winter. Same goes for beef. We are dependent on the two hemispheres to make up for what we lack.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
We have allowed China to steal technology in lieu of ignoring patents and other procurement of company secrets. I also acknowledge that some of of the agricultural products are not easily recognized but important to our food base.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic patents are a whole different topic and not just in the technology sector.

A silent war is being fought over in the EU as well as a few other places.

Any kind of media is patented. Yet it's all up in the air like a tossed chiefs salad made by a rookie.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer Suffice it to say that the espionage of China has advanced their aggressive technology acquisitions in addition to their own research. I hope the previous greed factor is now tempered with a note of caution that goes along with a real threat to our security.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic You got two incoming strikes from one direction. Another three strikes from a second direction.

What do you do when an overwhelming strike comes in from a third direction?

Which is worse?
Technology
Media
Or food?
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
China is actually suffering some hits from Nature. Along with Covid, there is a huge heat wave causing them a few economic insecurities.,when you would think they would pass us they are lucky if they just hold their ground.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic China just made a deal with Argentina!
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
Does this tie in with the vegetables mentioned previously?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic yes! It actually is all a part of the global market dependence.

We use Argentina products, China steals our ideas and gives a few minor ones in trade for food. Who losses out the most?
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer I think a lot of companies were very generous in their action with China just to see a new market open up. Hopefully they got over the newness of it all.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
I found the Chinese scientist that violated the genome editing rules, He Jiankui. He edited the genomes of yet to be born twins so that they would be resistant to HIV. He did three years of prison time.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic yes. Yet I find interesting is both the circumstances and the current wording of Chinese new laws...

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00001-y
The health ministry has also banned the researchers from ever working with human reproductive technology again, and the science ministry has banned them from applying for research funding, according to Xinhua.

This does not exclude human gene editing. Just on the reproductive end.

They have also vastly improve their CRISPER technology ever since 2018.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
Crisper has opened up so many possibilities for genome editing. I think I heard of other rumors that there were secret excursions in this new science.
I didn’t find that on the internet though recently.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic the article went on to say this in the next paragraph...

Scientists in China who are currently researching CRISPR for its potential to treat various genetic diseases by modifying cells other than embryos say that they fear He's actions might have a chilling effect on their work, too, even though it is not as ethically fraught.

Notice what they don't say. It doesn't say they have stopped!
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeWayfarer
Xi Jinping is beholden to no one.
I am certain it only takes his word to allow anything.
