The Enfield poltergeist.

Do you believe this case is genuine or was it all down to an elaborate hoax? Personally I think it started off genuine but when it died down the two girls faked some of the phenomena for sensationalism.

I have always treated reports of such events with considerable caution.

Was this one a bit like the "Cottingley Fairies" photographs, then?

In that case a practical joke rapidly went out of the control of the two girls responsible, especially after Arthur Conan Doyle - something of a 19C predecessor to Erik von Daniken - involved himself in it.

(The photographs of "fairies" in the old-fashioned children's book style, were really of drawings carefully cut out and suspended by fine threads from a tree.)
