There may have been a gross miss teaching of what hell is.
Christians have divided views today on hell since there are better understandings of scripture that is made more accessible.
Many Christians are beginning to understand hell is not a place eternal torment and torture. Learning how hell is described was integrated into Christianity from the Greek's view. The Hebrew / Israelites word is Sheol for hell and simply mean a place of darkness where you wait for judgment. Below gives a few references
