The only way to take control of our destiny, that is, [u]where[/u] we'll spend eternal life, is to follow Jesus.
Your soul speaks of your inner-life in relation to your own experience: your mind, heart, will, and imagination. It also includes your thoughts, desires, passions, and dreams. But your spirit speaks of the same inner-life in relation to God: your faith, hope, love, character, and perseverance.
Our soul is eternal and that's why we have the verse in John 3:16 about our soul living on through eternity. Where it goes, is up to us. If we leave it ignored, it will not find its way to heaven, the Bible is clear on that.
Ecclesiastes 12:7 says tells us what happens when a person dies. It says, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.” In other words, when a person dies, his or her spirit goes back to God, the body returns to dust and the soul of that person no longer exist. However, the final destination is up to us to decide right now while we are on this side of Heaven because there's no second chances after we die to make sure we chose where we want to spend eternity. Nowhere in Scripture is reincarnation stated. In fact just the opposite is stated, that once we die, we only die [b]once[/b]. Hebrews 9:27
